Open Question: what do flat track motorcycle racers throw off their bike?

i noticed today that when flat track racers are going down the straight away that they pulled something white off of what appeared to be their handle bars and simply drop it in the track... it might have been just this race because i have never noticed it before but it was definitely the thing to do since the track was littered with these things...
